Pothos vs. Philodendron

IS IT A Pothos? or A Philodendron? These houseplants have a lot in common: heart-shaped leaves, aerial roots,  and more!

here are 5 ways to tell these common but amazing plants apart!

1. Length of plant

Philodendron can grow to 6 feet long! But some types of pothos get even longer — the golden pothos can grow to a whopping 10 feet!

2. leaf shape & color

Philodendron leaves tend to have a more defined heart shape and are dark green. Pothos leaves have a less pointed tip and may have yellow markings.

3. texture of leaves

Pothos leaves have a bumpy, waxy texture. They’re also thicker than  philodendron leaves, which are smooth and matte.

4. Petiole

The petiole is the stalk that connects the leaves to the stem. Pothos petioles are grooved while philodendron petioles are typically round, smooth, and more slender.

5. aerial roots

Philodendron's aerial roots are long while pothos roots are long and stubby.
